If you are finding that you are struggling to get the balance right between your work and home life, you might benefit from making some changes to help stick to a better routine. When you are feeling stressed or tired through work, it can have a significant impact on your mental health, so it is really important to adapt your life to get a better balance. Here are some ways to find a healthier balance:
Getting enough sleep
When you are working shifts, it can be difficult to get into a good sleeping pattern, so if you are struggling with getting proper sleep, you might be able to make some changes that will help you. Good quality blackout curtains or a comfier bed can do the trick. Avoid doing anything that stimulates your brain, such as checking social media on your phone or drinking coffee before you are due to go to bed. What you eat and when you eat it can also affect your sleeping, so try to avoid foods that are high in fats particularly before you are going to bed.
Find ways to take your mind off work
If you are thinking about work when you get home, then try and do things that will take your mind off it. You could do some exercise if that works for clearing your head, or something as simple as making sure you take your work clothes off and taking a shower as soon as you get home to get into your comfy clothes, to help to relax.
Spend time off doing things you enjoy
Taking time off every so often is important to recharge your batteries and get away from your usual routine. If you can’t take a break somewhere away from home, at least try to plan in some fun activities with friends and family to feel like you have done something different with your time off. You could take a day trip to the countryside or the coast to feel like you are having a proper change of scenery.
Don’t over-commit
If you are feeling tired, then you need to make sure that you are not committing to doing too much. Give yourself some ‘Me’ time to unwind, rather than worrying about letting people down if you don’t feel up to socialising. Try and find ways you can save time on things like cooking by bulk preparing foods and freezing them, so you don’t have to spend time cooking each day.
