Working in the care sector can be so rewarding for the right people but before applying for any type of new work, it is important to get a full understanding of what the role entails to allow you to decide whether it is the right career for you.
Like with many jobs, there are lots of positives to working in care and a few jobs that might not be everyone’s idea of fun. However, if you are someone that feels pride in helping others and you are motivated to make a difference, then care work is probably going to suit you.
If you are considering a job in care, here is a bit more insight into what you can expect:
General duties
As a carer, you are responsible for looking after the physical and emotional needs of customers, whilst helping them to live independently and safely. This includes providing personal care such as showering, dressing, toileting, as well as medication support and some general housekeeping. Carers also provide nutritious meals and whilst you are not expected to be Mary Berry, you will need to know how to serve a well-balanced meal.
Working patterns
In the care industry, it is not like a shop or office where you work 9-5 every day. Our carers work around the clock, with many preferring to work in evenings to help to fit around other commitments. Because care is a 24-hour service, you have much more flexibility to select shift times that suit you.
Making a difference
When we ask our carers what they enjoy most about their jobs, the majority tell us that they get a lot of satisfaction from seeing the difference they make. They are not just impacting the quality of life of one or two people, they play a huge part in transforming their local community. From helping people to stay included in society with local outings and visits, to making sure someone has a friendly conversation each day, carers get to see the value they add to people’s lives.
