Why Care is a Great Industry for a Career Change

Working as a carer has a lot of perks and advantages, from high levels of job satisfaction to avoiding the 9-5 rut. Here are some of the top reasons to choose a career as a care worker:

Flexible working hours

A lot of jobs have very fixed hours, where employees are expected to start and finish at the same time every day. As well as not being very flexible around other commitments such as studying or childcare, this usually means that they must travel to and from work at the busiest times, which can be both stressful and time consuming. With carer roles, there is usually a lot of flexibility in shift starting times, as well as more options for part-time hours compared to many other types of work.

Rewarding and fulfilling

A recent survey showed that over three quarters of support workers are happy in their job most of the time. This is considerably higher levels of job satisfaction than the majority of other sectors and many of the people surveyed preferred support work to previous roles in industries such as retail and hospitality. When you work as a carer, you get the opportunity to make a huge different to the quality of life of the people you care for, which can be more fulfilling than working for businesses with sales targets and similar business objectives. Making someone’s day a bit brighter with a chat and a friendly face can give you a lot of job fulfillment.

Job variety

If the idea of doing the exact same activity every day is not for you, then you will be pleased to hear that the role of a care worker has great variety. No two days are ever the same, as you will be visiting different people and there will be a wide range of duties involved that will vary throughout the day.

On-the-job training

Many care jobs do not require you to have qualifications and you can get trained up once you start in the role. You can also pursue qualifications to continue professional development throughout your career in the care sector. Most care providers have a very comprehensive induction training schedule and then provide additional support once you start in role.

At HSG, we offer opportunities to start a career in the care industry, without the requirement of qualifications, as we provide extensive training when you join us and throughout your career with HSG. There are also lots of different progression options if you then want to further your career at HSG.
