The aging population has shown a massive demand for carers across the UK and this is set to increase more over the next few years. As the number of carers begins to increase, the Carers Trust has created an event to recognise Britain’s young carers.
Young Carers Awareness Day will take place on January 30th, 2020 and is an annual event organised by Carers Trust. The aim of this is to bring awareness and recognition to children and young adults who become young carers either for a family member or somebody else.
Studies have shown that one in 4 secondary school children may be a young carer, although for most becoming a carer begins at a younger age. This can be very isolating, worrying and stressful for a young person and could later affect their educational experience.
Carers Trust has launched their Count Me In! Campaign which calls on compulsory education providers to proactively identify young carers to make sure that they are receiving the recognition and support they deserve to make sure they have a good quality of life and still receive a great education.
The Count Me In! campaign includes plenty of resources for education providers and young carers services to help any young carer and shows how people can get involved to support the day.
If you are a young carer or young adult carer or maybe you know somebody who could benefit from the support, there are plenty of organisations that can help including the UK’s membership charity, Carers UK and The Children’s Society who also work with lots of young people who become carers.
The 2019 Young Carers Awareness Day was held on January 31st and focused on the theme of mental health and raised awareness of the mental health of young carers. The message of the campaign was #CareForMeToo!. This campaign helped raise public awareness through extensive coverage in the media through outlets such as BBC and The Daily Express.
Let’s show our support for our younger generation who are facing challenges and stress in their daily lives by doing an amazing job of supporting those who need it. This January, show your support for Young Carers on January 30th.
